XOXO
1. House of Balloons.
From the beginning of The Weeknd's debut mixtape, House of Balloons, he informs us that we'll want to be “high for this.” Named after a one-bedroom apartment he shared with friends in his Toronto hometown, House of Balloons is a dark body of work, with trippy tales of partying, heartbreak, and drug-fuelled sexcapades. A song that is basically a narcoleptic dream.
2. Often
Often," a track from his second album "Beauty Behind the Madness," which was released in 2015. He chose "Often" because of the difference it had with other music. He was studying, finding ways to share the complicated feelings around loose hook-ups and various synonyms concerning how a woman's anatomy responds to his sex appeal, and how to put into his music and make it a hit. This song shows that his studying paid off - it was the song that helped kickstart his career and got him and more of his songs on to mainstream radio.
3. Starboy
The song speaks about the extravagant lifestyle The Weeknd was experiencing at the time. The lyrics were known for being raw and did not hold back, similar to a previous release called "The Hills". His voice for the song was praised and signalled the start of his trademark voice quality. When the song came out, media outlets claimed he was going through a "Michael Jackson phase," to which The Weeknd disagreed with. He claimed that the comment did not feel genuine and that they were setting him up to fail. "I wanted to transcend," he said. "I wanted the music to transcend."
4. After Hours
Here The Weeknd is singing about his “coming down” experience ( from the drugs)and how he is in a dark place, his “after hours”. He is regretting how he did hurt his significant other and is wondering where she is now when he needs her the most.
In the very last part, the outro of the song you can sense his vulnerability that might take you off guard.
5. I feel it coming
In this song, The Weeknd feels this connection with a girl who’s been traumatized by a bad relationship. He’s reassuring her that she can trust him and that she can relax, feel comfortable with him, with reference to sex too.
When Zane Lowe asked The Weeknd about the collaboration with Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo of Daft Punk and how the song came about, he said: “So I came in, we went to Paris. I came into the session and Thomas and Guy-Manuel had already started a track, which was ‘I Feel It Coming,’ which was just the music. And it was one of the tracks that they were playing for me and I was freestyling over it, trying to find a vibe with it. You know, Guy-Manuel and Thomas were kind of directing me on how to make it because they want it to sound as authentic as possible.”
It was quite an experience for The Weeknd to write the song with Daft Punk, in an interview the Wall Street Journal he said: “Their studio is like a spaceship; there’s a lot of gear, but the way they make music, the way they explain it, is very cinematic. It’s like they’re reading a page out of a novel: ‘We want to make sure that at the end, it feels like the sun’s coming up, and maybe there’s a car chase.’ They can get technical, but it was interesting how they visualise making music.”
6. Blinding lights
If you've been anywhere near a streaming service or radio or anything that plays music in the past six months or so, there's a good chance that you've heard the synth-heavy bars of The Weeknd's "Blinding Lights." As August comes to an end, it has amassed a casual 1,365,914,088 streams since its initial release back in November of 2019.
7. Love me harder
The song is a duet that both talk about, well, intense intercourse. The song received critical claim upon its debut, with many praising The Weeknd. Many noted that though he is much less vulgar in this song than in his own releases, it is still just as sultry. Many praised the two for being a perfect pair, with numerous music critics loving the dark, sensual, slow duet the two released. Despite many saying the two made an unlikely pairing, they successfully and beautifully pulled of this seductive synth-pop track.
8. Earned it
"Earned It," which was part of the "Fifty Shades of Grey" soundtrack, also released in 2015. Like the movie, "Earned It" talks about BDSM. The song praised upon its release, even peaking at number three on the Billboard Hot 100. It is the first song from the singer to rank within the top 5 of the charts. It was so well-loved that it was even nominated for "Best Original Song" at the 88th Academy Awards and won the Grammy Award for "Best R&B Performance" at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards. Rolling Stones ranked the song at number 39 in its "50 Best Songs of 2015" list, along with The Weeknd's other songs "The Hills" and "Can't Feel My Face."
9. Save your tears
The most recent addition to his all-time Top 10, Save Your Tears has quickly established itself in The Weeknd's hall of fame. The track is one of the most pop-driven from his After Hours album, though its hefty dose of dark melancholy is signature Weeknd stuff. The song narrowly missed out on becoming his second Number 1 in the UK, boosted to the upper echelons by an exquisite rework with Ariana Grande.
